County Libraries Add Go!Kits

The Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) will have educational kits at numerous branches designed to spark an interest in science beginning May 10. The GO! Kits are part of MCPL’s ACE (All Children Excel) initiative to help children succeed in school.

To help meet that need, MCPL has developed educational, interactive Go! Kits to introduce young children to various concepts in science, technology, engineering and math while satisfying their natural curiosity and encouraging them to explore the world around them.

Each kit includes two books about a specific science topic, an educational toy, a mini iPad preloaded with one e-book and several appropriate apps, plus a folder with related activities. The kits will be available at selected MCPL branches beginning May 10 and may be borrowed for two weeks at a time.

“Children need to enter school ready to learn and to be curious about the world around them,” said MCPL Director Parker Hamilton.  “We feel the Go! Kits are an exciting, inventive way to help them do that.”

The materials were selected for two specific age groups:

Little Explorer Go! Kits –preschoolers, ages three to six. There are nine science topics from which to choose — dinosaurs, oceans, space, plants, volcanoes, animals, insects, machines and experiments.  The Little Explorer kits will be available at Aspen Hill, Gaithersburg, Noyes, Olney, Silver Spring, Twinbrook and White Oak libraries.

Young Voyager Go! Kits  —elementary-age children in grades three to six.  There are six different science-based topics — the solar system, bridges, the world around us, weather, robots and machines.  The Young Explorer kits will be available at Aspen Hill, Gaithersburg, Olney, Silver Spring, Twinbrook and White Oak libraries.
