Hypothermia Alert Continues through Monday Night

UPDATE: The alert has been extended until 10 p.m. Monday.

Montgomery County has issued a hypothermia alert for Thursday starting at 10 p.m. continuing through Friday at 10 p.m.

The County advises residents to be prepared for wind chill values below 20 degrees. During these conditions, hypothermia and frostbite are likely to occur.

The signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. Infants may be lethargic and their skin may be bright red and cold.

It is best to stay indoors if possible. Individuals who spend extended periods outdoors should wear extra layers and when possible, take frequent breaks in a warm location.

Montgomery County facilities, such as libraries, recreation centers and senior centers are open during their regular hours for use by anyone needing an escape from the cold. Public shopping centers are also available as warm locations during their regular hours of operation. Outreach program providers encourage individuals who are homeless to seek shelter.

The shelters in Montgomery County will allow homeless individuals to stay inside until temperatures increase, and/or return to a shelter early from daytime activity programs.
