County Council to Host Town Hall Meeting for Clergy and Faith Leaders
The Montgomery County Council is scheduled to host a town hall where members of the clergy and faith communities have a chance to talk about specific issues and ask councilmembers questions in an “organized, but informal, setting.”
Some of the topics to be discussed during this meeting are land use issues- including where houses of worship can be located and zoning that could restrict expansion or renovation of existing places of worship, official designation and observance of religious holidays, religious curriculum in schools, regulations restricting property tax exemption for religious use, programs for the needy and seniors, and public safety and community relations issues.
“There are few people who know the pulse of their communities as well as leaders of the faith community. Religious leaders have issues that pertain particularly to their congregations, but they also see what is of most importance to their members. This meeting will give us an opportunity to hear about a broad range of issues from a valued and important group of leaders in our County,” Montgomery County Council President George Leventhal said in a news release.
This meeting is expected to take place on Sept. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the third-floor hearing room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Avenue in Rockville.
“It is a privilege for faith leaders to be addressing the county council and I expect they will articulate the needs and interests of their constituents well,” said Mansfield Kaseman, the county’s interfaith community liaison.
