County Council Meets on Oct. 1: Minimum Wage on Agenda

MarcElrichMontgomery County Councilmember Marc Elrich is scheduled to introduce a bill at 10:15 a.m. on Oct. 1 that will be part of a collaborative effort with the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County to establish a regional minimum wage of $11.50 per hour. The bill will be introduced during the Montgomery Council’s regular weekly general session.

The Council’s morning session will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Third Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The morning and afternoon sessions—including three public hearings scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.—will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast also will be streamed through the County’s website at www.montgomerycountymd.gov. It will be repeated starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4.

At 12:15 p.m. in the Sixth Floor Conference Room, the Council will have an informal brown bag lunch with members of the County’s Collaboration Council. That meeting is open to the public, but will not be televised.

Councilmember Elrich announced early in September that he would be introducing a bill to raise the minimum wage in Montgomery County. His original proposal was to raise the rate to $12 an hour, which is stated in Bill 27-13 that will be introduced on Tuesday. However, he said he intends to amend the rate to $11.50 an hour—similar to bills that Prince George’s County Council Chair Andrea Harrison and District of Columbia Council Chair Phil Mendelson will be introducing in their respective jurisdictions as part of an effort to establish a Washington regional minimum wage.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., the Council is scheduled to receive its regular update from Ulder J. Tillman, the County health officer. Among the topics she is scheduled to address is how the Affordable Care Act will impact residents of Montgomery County.
