County Council Committees Meet Today

The Montgomery County Council’s Education Committee will hold a worksession at 9:30 a.m. on April 7 to discuss the Fiscal Year 2015 budget request of Montgomery College. The worksession is part of the Council’s review of County Executive Isiah Leggett’s FY15 recommended operating budget.

The Education Committee, which is chaired by Craig Rice and includes Councilmembers Phil Andrews and Cherri Branson, will meet in the Seventh Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The meeting will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast also will be streamed through the County Web site at: www.montgomerycountymd.gov/council/ondemand/index.html.

Montgomery College is the largest community college in the state, providing programs for more than 26,000 students over three campuses. The total recommended budget for the college is $290 million, an increase of $10 million (3.6 percent) from the FY14 approved budget.

At 9:30 a.m. in the Third Floor Conference Room, the Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment Committee, which is chaired by Roger Berliner and includes Councilmembers Nancy Floreen and Hans Riemer, will hold a worksesson on a proposed supplemental appropriation to the FY14 operating budget of $625,000 that would provide for the purchase of five electric vehicles and the installation of 11 charging stations and the purchase of one compressed natural gas truck. The funds would come from a state grant, with no County match required.

The committee also will review the operating budget request of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.

At 1:30 p.m. in the Third Floor Conference Room, the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee, which is chaired by Nancy Navarro and includes Councilmembers Branson and Riemer, will review the FY15 operating budget requests for the Board of Elections and the Department of Technology Services. It also will review the Cable Television and Communications Plan for the next year.
