County Council Addresses Systemic Racism in Montgomery County

Montgomery County Council President Nancy Navarro announced an initiative to introduce racial equity and social justice policy in county government. County Executive Marc Elrich joins Navarro and the council to create policies that will address systemic racism.

The council will hold a town hall meeting to allow community members to share their concerns. The feedback will be used to design strategies to help create racially and socially conscious legislation. The town hall will take place on March 13 at 7:30 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building.

Both Navarro and Elrich have been advocates for racial equity and social justice in policymaking. In a video released by the County Cable Montgomery, Navarro addresses some of the disparities among county residents.

“It is so important then for policymakers to have various structural mechanisms to not only examine those gaps but understand if the decisions we are making exacerbate or actually close disparities,” said Navarro.
