County Celebrates Recycling Efforts (Video)

Montgomery County celebrates ‘Recycling Awareness Week’ from May 20 – 24 with numerous events around the county. The county’s goal is to recycle 70 percent solid waste by the year 2020, an increase of 20 percent set one year ago. This week’s events recognizes many individuals, businesses, and schools for their recycling efforts.

School Recycling Assemblies. The Division of Solid Waste Services (DSWS) will present the “Magic of Recycling” show, an interactive educational program on recycling and saving natural resources to twelve schools. According to Alan Pultyniewicz, DSWS Program Manager, each school has an established recycling program and was selected for their outstanding recycling efforts. DSWS hopes the assemblies will motivate and educate the students to share their recycling knowledge with their families and community. Congratulations to the following schools for their recycling efforts:

• Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School, Rockville
• St. Patrick’s School, Rockville
• St. Catherine Laboure School, Wheaton
• St. John the Evangelist, Silver Spring
• Holy Redeemer School, Kensington
• St. Francis International School, Silver Spring
• St. Andrew Apostle School, Silver Spring
• St. Martin of Tours School, Gaithersburg
• Village Montessori School, Montgomery Village
• Evergreen School, Silver Spring
• St. Bernadette School, Silver Spring

Recycling Achievement Recognition Program on May 22 from 10 a.m. – 12 noon at the Silver Spring Civic Building, Silver Spring.
DSWS will recoginize 50 businesses, organizations and employees, 21 multi-family properties, property managers and staff, and residents in the following categories: excellence in recycling for businesses and multi-family properties which recycled more than 70 percent of their waste generated in 2012, and outstanding achievement for those businesses, employees, property owners/managers, and multi-family properties, staff and residents for their contributions to successful recycling, waste reduction, buying recycled and educational efforts.

Five DSWS recycling volunteers will be recognized for contributing their time and talents to increase overall recycling awareness in the County.

County Executive Ike Leggett will present remarks and Jonathan Powers, Federal Environmental Executive, will give the keynote address. Powers is responsible for promoting environmental and energy sustainability across federal government operations.

Recycling Volunteer Appreciation and Recognition Ceremony on May 23 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. in the Executive Office Building Cafeteria, Rockville.
DSWS will recognize the contributions of its dedicated recycling program volunteers who are vital to the Division’s efforts to increase awareness of recycling, waste reduction, reuse, buying recycled products, grass cycling and backyard composting to others in their community to reach the 70 percent recycling goal. Volunteers who contributed more than 20 hours of service during the fiscal year to date will receive special recognition.
