County Boards Looking to Fill Vacancies

Five county boards and commissions are trying to fill vacancies:

• County-wide Recreation and Parks Advisory Board
• Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board
• Interagency Coordinating Board for Community Use of Public Facilities
• Commission on People with Disabilities
• Board of Registration for Building Contractors

The deadline for applying to the recreation and the Silver Spring boards is Sept. 13. The deadline for apply to the public facilities, disabilities and building contractors boards is Sept. 15.

Meanwhile, the County Council has scheduled interviews for a Board of Appeals opening on Sept. 12.

The 15-member recreation advisory board advises the county executive, county council, Montgomery County Recreation and the planning board on county recreation and park needs. Members serve three years.

The 17-member Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board advises the county executive and County Council on Silver Spring and Takoma Park issues, including transportation, economic development, housing, youth activities and the environment. All meetings are open to the public and we encourage community participation.

The board represents residents who live in the Silver Spring Region, which includes the area between Rock Creek Park and the Prince George’s County line, the area south of I-495 to the District of Columbia, including all of the City of Takoma Park, & all of Four Corners, including the Four Corners neighborhoods north of I-495.

The 12-member Interagency Coordinating Board for Community Use of Public Facilities encourages the community’s use of public facilities. The board makes policy decisions that balance the community’s need for space without interfering with the K-12 instructional program.

The 25-member Commission on People with Disabilities has 10 vacancies; nine current members are eligible to re-apply. The commission advises the County government on the coordination and development of policies for people with disabilities. The county executive appoints commission members subject to confirmation by the County Council. The commission advises the county executive and the County Council on the needs and concerns of the County’s residents who have psychiatric, developmental, physical or sensory disabilities.

The five-member building contractors board certifies to the Director of the Office of Consumer Protection whether applicants or the organization is qualified to comply with the building codes and laws of the county and state, as those duties and responsibilities relate to the construction of new homes in the county. The board may conduct hearings and pursue action against a licensee including revocation of the license.
