County Board of Elections Gears up for Early Voting (Video)
Primary Election Day is around the corner and officials with the Montgomery County Board of Elections want voters to know they have the option to vote early.
MyMCMedia’s Valerie Bonk has the story of how the Board of Elections has extended the options of where voters can go to cast their ballots starting June 12:
“Early voting is tremendously important. It gives the voter the opportunity to choose when and where they vote so they’re not forced to vote on just one day or to vote by mail,” said Marjorie Roher, Public Information Officer with the Montgomery County Board of Elections.
During the 2012 election, hundreds of voters lined up around the block to cast their ballots in Silver Spring, making it one of the biggest turn outs in the State.
This year, voters can cast their ballots at one of nine early voting locations across the County.
“We added four new locations, we did have five in 2012 but now we have nine and we also made a change to one of them so we have better representation throughout the County,” Roher said. “We’ve tried to spread them out a little bit better so that it will help the voters up County as well as down County finding a place that’s easy and convenient for them to cast their ballot.”
The new locations include the Activity Center at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg, the Damascus Community Recreation Center in Chevy Chase, the Mid-County Community Recreation Center in Silver Spring and the Wheaton Community Recreation Center.
Some candidates and local residents say they’ll be taking advantage of the opportunity to vote early.
“Early voting is terribly important,” said Tom Moore, Council Candidate for District 3. “I voted early in the last election it was a good experience, lines are short and it’s something I’m going to do this time because on Election Day we’re going to be running around like chickens with their heads cut off trying to make a last ditch attempt to meet some more voters.”
“I am going to vote early as a way to campaign and as a way to make sure that I get my vote counted,” said Doug Duncan, candidate for County Executive.
“It’s extremely important to a number of people,” said Bethesda resident Daniel Burgess. “It seems that every time the vote is suppressed, people I don’t like get into office.”
