County Council President Nancy Navarro released a press statement expressing her condolences over the death of Steve Goldstein, the chief of staff to Councilmember Craig Rice.

Goldstein passed away at his home on May 27 after battling ALS. He worked in politics with Rice since the councilmember’s election to the House of Delegates in 2006, and he served as Rice’s chief of staff during his first eight years on the council.

“He was a terrific Council colleague, who faithfully fulfilled his duties as he fought his battle with ALS. We were all impressed by his positive attitude and the dignity with which he chose to live his life. Each of us have been touched by Steve’s kindness, and he will be terribly missed,” Navarro wrote in her statement.

Rice thanked Goldstein and his family in a Facebook post, reflecting on what they had accomplished together.

“For 16 years…he’s been there. Right over my shoulder to guide me in the right direction. No one could EVER ask for a better Chief of Staff. He would always support my ideas, no matter how crazy, although he would throw in a little ‘are you sure?’ along with it,” Rice said.
