Councilmember Leventhal to Announce Near End to Veteran Homelessness in Montgomery County (PHOTO)
Councilmember George Leventhal will announce that the County has effectively ended veteran homelessness at a news conference on Monday, December 21st. $500,000 in funding was appropriated by the Council and used to house 18 homeless veterans and provide housing for identifiable homeless veterans.
Councilmember Leventhal will be joined by Councilmembers Craig Rice, Sidney Katz, as well as local leaders and activist from the community. The County has submitted certification requests to the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness and the Zero 2016 Campaign, which is a movement to end veteran homelessness by 2016. Councilmember Leventhal expects an announcement about the findings in the coming days. The County set a goal to move 58 homeless veterans into permanent homes by December 31, 2015. So far the County has housed 53 veterans and by the end of the year 58 will have permanent housing.
“Housing every identifiable homeless veteran in Montgomery County has always been and continues to be one of my top priorities,” Leventhal said. “Montgomery County how has a coordinated and efficient system, which has been developed with our community partners to ensure that every veteran in our county has access to the supports needed to move quickly from homelessness to permanent housing. Providing a stable home for our veterans is simply the right thing to do for those who have sacrificed so much for our country,” he said.
The news conference will be held at 11 a.m. on the third floor conference room at the County Council Building in Rockville.
The Council collaborated with, the Montgomery County Coalition for the Homeless, Bethesda Cares, the County’s Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Housing and Community Affairs, the Housing Opportunities Commission of Montgomery County and the Department of Veterans Affairs and others for support.
