Councilmember Branson Says MCPS Needs an Inspector General

photo of Cherri BransonMontgomery County Councilmember Cherri Branson, District 5, is calling for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) to have its own inspector general.

In an opinion piece published in today’s Washington Post, Branson says she was surprised to learn during the recent MCPS credit card controversy that the county’s public schools system “employs no independent auditor.”

Noting that the school system accounts for more than half the county budget, Branson writes: “You would think that our schools would put extra emphasis on transparency and accountability. In fact, the opposite is true.”

Branson says it is important for the County Council and residents to “have a right to independent confirmation of how the money is spent.”

She concludes that “professional oversight” is needed.

“It is time for Montgomery County Public Schools to have its own inspector general,” Branson said in the op-ed.
