Council Works on Police and HHS Budget 4/10

The Montgomery County Council’s Public Safety Committee at 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 10, will hold a worksession on the Fiscal Year 2015 budget request of the Police Department. The worksession is part of the Council’s review of the FY15 operating budget recommended by County Executive Isiah Leggett.

The Public Safety Committee, which is chaired by Phil Andrews and includes Councilmembers Roger Berliner and Marc Elrich, will meet in the Seventh Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The meeting will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcast also will be streamed through the County Web site.

The County Executive has recommended a total budget of $273 million in FY15 for the Police Department, an increase of 5 percent from the FY14 approved budget. The recommended FY15 budget includes Year 3 of the department’s three-year staffing plan, which would add:

  • 21 new sworn positions in the Wheaton area and the Germantown Central Business District
  • Two new school resource officers
  • 44 new positions at the new Animal Services and Adoption Facility
  • Two new forensic scientist positions

The Public Safety Committee also will review the budget request for the Department of Liquor Control. After that worksession, the committee will be briefed by the County’s Office of the Inspector General on a review of management control of the Department of Liquor Control that it recently conducted.

At 9 a.m. in the Third Floor Conference Room, the Health and Human Services Committee, which is chaired by George Leventhal and includes Councilmembers Nancy Navarro and Craig Rice, will receive an update on efforts to create a Montgomery County Food Recovery Program. It also will review the FY15 budget request of the Department of Health and Human Services regarding public health services and special needs housing.
