Council Says Trump Owes American People an Apology
The Montgomery County Council has written to President Donald Trump saying the American people deserves an apology for his remarks in the wake of the demonstration in Charlottesville, Virginia, last weekend.

In Charlottesville last weekend, white supremacists marched to oppose a plan to move a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee from a city park. The white supremacists — which included neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan — clashed with others who supported the removal of the statue. A Charlottesville woman died when one of the white supremacists drove his car into a crowd of people.
In the wake of Charlottesville, cities across the country are rethinking the placement of statues that honor Confederate soldiers and other figures. Baltimore removed four statues in the early morning hours Wednesday. In Annapolis, a statue of Roger Brooke Taney early this morning. Taney, a Supreme Court justice from Maryland, wrote the Dred Scott Decision in 1857, which held slaves could not be American citizens.
Last month, Montgomery County moved a statue from a former courthouse in Rockville to private land at White’s Ferry in Dickerson. Although some residents opposed the move, the relocation prompted no protests.
