Council President Statement on Budget

“Today the Council reviewed the County’s six-year fiscal plan. The current economic and revenue projections make it clear that our approach to the Fiscal Year 2014 budget, which starts next July 1, must be cautious. Recovery from the recession continues but remains fragile. The status of state and federal support for the County is uncertain.

Also today, the Superintendent issued his proposed Montgomery County Public Schools budget for FY 2014. The proposed budget exceeds the state’s maintenance of effort funding requirement by $10 million. The County fiscal plan projects that even the MOE funding level would place great pressure on other vital County services.

We are in the initial stage of a process that will conclude when the Council makes final FY 2014 budget decisions in May. Over the next five months the Council will work with all County agencies, the Executive and County stakeholders to develop a budget that fairly addresses the concerns of the entire community.”
