Council Elects Leventhal as President, Floreen Vice President (VIDEO)

NewCouncilOfficersVicePresidentFloreenPresidentLeventhalB 12-2-14Montgomery County Councilmembers unanimously elected Council Vice President George Leventhal as the Council’s newest President on Dec. 2.

Leventhal was nominated for the position by newly elected District 3 Councilmember Sidney Katz, who described Leventhal as his friend.

Councilmember Nancy Navarro then nominated Nancy Floreen as the Council’s Vice President. Floreen was also elected unanimously. They will serve one year terms as officers of the Council.

During his remarks at the dais, Leventhal said he wants Montgomery County to be known as the county that works. “We are not Congress,” he said, adding, “we want results.”

Leventhal also talked about the importance of creating jobs,  the need to market the county better as an international gateway, the need for equity and fairness in contracting, and the importance of staying in front on environmental issues.

“We want to have the cleanest, safest and healthiest county in America,” Leventhal said.

But the most important thing for the county, Leventhal said, is investments in transportation infrastructure.

Other initiatives, he touted, included an ad hoc committee for Liquor Control, an upcoming town hall meeting for clergy and continued outreach with citizens in Montgomery County. He said the public schools are the pride of our county but that changes are needed to the Maintenance of Effort law.

“We are going to show what it means to be the county that works,” said Leventhal.
