Council Committee to Discuss Firefighters Recruitment

The Montgomery County Council’s Public Safety Committee will hold a work session at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 9 to discuss efforts to recruit volunteer firefighters and Emergency Medical Service personnel to supplement the services of career firefighters.

The Public Safety Committee, which is chaired by Phil Andrews and includes Councilmembers Roger Berliner and Marc Elrich, will meet in the Seventh Floor Hearing Room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville. The meeting will be televised live by County Cable Montgomery (CCM—Cable Channel 6 on Comcast and RCN, Channel 30 on Verizon). The broadcasts also will be streamed through the County Web site at www.montgomerycountymd.gov.

The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service is a combination system, with both career and volunteer personnel providing first response fire and emergency medical services. The County has maintained strong volunteer involvement, which significantly strengthens its overall fire and rescue structure.

The Public Safety Committee also will receive an update on the Community Emergency Response team, which is celebrating its 10th year of active service. The purpose of the team is to educate residents about disaster preparedness and train them in basic disaster response skills to assist during a crisis.

At 9:30 a.m. in the Third Floor Conference Room, the Council’s Audit Committee will be updated by the activities of the County’s Office of the Inspector General.
