Council Committee Hosts Forum on Metro Challenges (VIDEO)

The County Council’s Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy and Environment Committee held a forum this week to discuss the challenges facing the Metrorail system. Watch this video recap:

Ensuring a safe, reliable, and successful Metrorail system is key to quality of life and economic opportunities for our County and the region,” said Councilmember Roger Berliner. “Our community depends on the Red Line. However, as the tragic loss of life at L’Enfant Plaza underscored, and the subsequent investigations by the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) confirmed, the fundamentals for safety are not in place. As critically important as safety is, it is not the only issue confronting WMATA. There are serious financial issues. There are major disagreements among the jurisdictions regarding what qualities we need in the next General Manager. There is ineffective regulatory oversight. And it is also true that the system needs a more secure and robust funding stream. Understandably, our residents are looking for answers, not only to what is wrong with Metro at present, but how Metro can ‘right the ship’ now and into the future.”
