Council Approves Biotech Grant Program

The Montgomery County Council on Tuesday unanimously approved Tuesday a county matching fund for businesses that receive federal grants.

Councilmember George Leventhal spearheaded the grant, which was co-sponsored by the eight remaining council members.

The county grant would match grants to businesses that receive federal Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grants. By matching the grants, the council hopes small businesses that receive the grants will locate in the county.

Leventhal talked about the grant program at a forum he hosted in February. A small local grant, he said then, would help startups with potential investors.

The bill establishes grant awards capped at either $25,000 or $75,000, depending on federal support.
