Council Appoints Casey Anderson as Planning Board Chair (VIDEO & PHOTOS)
The Montgomery County Council named Silver Spring resident Casey Anderson as the new chair of the County Planning Board on July 15. Anderson replaces Chair Francoise Carrier, whose term expired on June 14. She did not apply for reappointment.
Anderson, who is also a current member of the Planning Board, was appointed by an 8-1 vote. Council President Craig Rice, Vice President George Leventhal and Councilmembers Phil Andrews, Roger Berliner, Cherri Branson, Nancy Floreen, Nancy Navarro and Hans Riemer voted in favor of his appointment. Councilmember Marc Elrich was opposed.
“I feel great. It’s a little overwhelming,” said Anderson after the vote. “It will take some time to absorb but I have been on the board for three years so I have a pretty good idea of what is going on in the building and what the issues are with the Council and the Executive branch and some of the plans we are working on so I feel like I will be ready to hit the ground running.”
Anderson is scheduled to begin his term in August pending the approval of the Council’s Resolution by the County Executive.
A father of two children who have grown up in Montgomery County, Anderson said this planning job is about the future.
“I want to make sure that Montgomery County in the future offers the same kind of quality of life and opportunities that it’s offered to me and the previous generations of people who have come here to make a home or to work or to start a business,” said Anderson.
He said there is a lot to work on this year, including the Bethesda Central Business District, Aspen Hill master plan, streamlining regulatory processes and transportation tests.
The Council received letters of interest from 18 applicants to fill the vacancy. Council President Rice said the Council will soon be accepting applications to fill Anderson’s position on the Planning Board.
Before today’s vote, the Council also voted to up the salary for the position of chair to $200,000. That vote was opposed by Councilmembers Phil Andrews, Marc Elrich and Nancy Floreen.
Anderson said he didn’t give the salary a moment’s thought. “I am thrilled to have this job,” he said. “I am looking forward to diving into it with everything I have. I am really excited because the work is the kind of thing that gets you out of bed in the morning excited to take on those challenges.”
An attorney and community activist, Anderson was appointed to the Planning Board in June 2011. Previously, Anderson served on the boards of the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, the Citizens League of Montgomery County and the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence and the Committee for Montgomery. Anderson is a former vice president of the Woodside Civic Association and executive vice chairman of the Silver Spring Citizens Advisory Board. He holds undergraduate and law degrees from Georgetown University and a graduate degree in journalism from Columbia University.
