Contest Gives Students a Chance to be Mayor for a Day

The deadline is approaching for fourth-graders attending schools in Rockville to submit essays for the statewide “If I Were Mayor” essay contest.

The theme of the contest, organized by the Maryland Municipal League and the Maryland Mayors Association, is “Live to Lead.” Students are asked to write an essay, no longer than 275 words, that would describe how, if they were mayor, they would get the community involved in addressing an issue or cause, and letting people know how their city is making positive changes.

Essays must be received by Friday, March 30.

One winning essay will be selected from each of MML’s 11 regional districts throughout the state. Winners, their parents and their teachers will be recognized during an awards ceremony in Annapolis.

In addition, Mayor Bridget Donnell Newton will select a Rockville-area student to serve as the city’s Mayor for a Day in May.
