Construction Worker Killed on the Job in Bethesda

A construction worker was killed in a freak accident that occurred around 8:35 a.m. on Sept. 16 at the 5700 block of Bent Branch Road in Bethesda.

According to Montgomery County police, a construction crew was working outside of the residence when one of the workers was accidentally pinned between an excavator and the house. Two other workers were injured as they tried to free the pinned man, police said.

All three of the victims were transported to Suburban Hospital, according to police, where the first victim died from his injuries. Police said the other two workers suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Police have identified the worker as John Joseph Whitney, age 42, of Hickory Ridge Road in Columbia.

The Maryland Occupational Safety and Health Department has been notified and is assisting in the ongoing investigation.
