Delaney to Hold Voting Rights Panel at Boyds School

“Protecting voting rights in our time” is the theme of a panel discussion hosted by Congressman John Delaney at the Historic Boyds School in Montgomery County on Feb. 17. 

The event brings together local leaders and experts for a discussion on voting rights in honor of Black History Month.

“The right to vote is absolutely fundamental to our democracy,” said U.S. Congressman John Delaney (D-Dist. 6). “As we celebrate Black History Month and as Congress responds to the Supreme Court’s request that the Voting Rights Act be updated, it is important for me to convene with local experts and community leaders on this topic.”

Professor and Voting Rights Expert Gilda Daniels, Voting Rights Advocate Yvette Lewis, Montgomery County Council President Craig Rice, and President of the Montgomery County Chapter of the NAACP Anita Powell will join Congressman Delaney for the discussion.

The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. at the Historic Boyds School at 19510 White Ground Road.

The Boyds School, a one-room schoolhouse, served as the only public school for Boyds area African-American children from 1895-1936.

“We cannot separate this issue from our nation’s racial history and the African-American schoolhouse in Boyds is a reminder of our past and the old divisions we’re still working to overcome,” Delaney said.
