Comptroller Franchot Announces ‘Shop Maryland for the Holidays’ to Help Local Businesses

Shop Local for the Holidays | Maryland Comptroller website

Shop Maryland for the Holidays’ annual campaign was announced Oct. 26, as an initiative to buy local for this upcoming holiday season by Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot. The campaign will be partnering with Maryland Retailers Associate and restaurants with a new addition of credit unions this year.

Several Maryland-based credit unions are offering financial incentives to their members for shopping at local businesses from now until 2021.

“Holiday sales can dictate whether a business survives and this year especially,” Franchot said in the press release, “They’re depending on support from local customers to keep the lights on.”

Each credit union determines their own specific reward system for its members.
State Employee Credit Union (SECU), Maryland’s largest credit union, is participating this year. As a reward, they will double credit card points, Dave Sweiderk, president and CEO of SECU Maryland, said in a statement.

Several other credit unions are participating in the financial incentive program, including:

  • Five Star of MD Federal Credit Union
  • Market USA Federal Credit Union
  • Atlantic Financial Federal Credit Union
  • DOLFCU
  • GPOFCU
  • Chessie FCU
