Trash Strike Continues, The Impact in Montgomery County Described as “Minimal”

UPDATED 12-29-14 The Montgomery County Division of Solid Waste Services (Department of Environmental Protection) is reminding residents scheduled for trash and recycling collections in the areas affected by the strike at Unity Disposal and Recycling LLC, to put their trash and recyclables out by 7 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 29.

Residents in the affected areas may call 311 with questions about their service and can view service information and maps of the affected areas at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/sws/strike.

The Montgomery County Division of Solid Waste Services (DSWS) reports that the current strike staged by workers at one of its trash/recycling contractors, Unity Disposal and Recycling, LLC, should have minimal impact on service delivery Friday and Saturday.

Unity, which is the only one of the County’s three trash/recycling collectors affected by the strike, services four of the 13 service areas that include trash and recycling in Bethesda, Aspen Hill, Colesville/North Silver Spring and recycling only north of Gaithersburg.

According to county officials, just over 12,600 homes a day are serviced by Unity for trash and recycling pickups.

“Unity Disposal has taken steps to help ensure that their County customers due for service today and tomorrow have their trash and recyclables picked up,” said Robin Ennis, DSWS collections chief. “Due to the holiday slide schedule, the routes being served today are the Thursday customers; Friday’s customers will be served tomorrow.”

Pickups on recycling routes, which generally begin at 7 a.m., will undoubtedly run late, perhaps into the evening hours. Customers should not remove materials from the curb.
