Icy Conditions: Commuters Urged to Use Caution

The Maryland Department of Transportation’s State Highway Administration (SHA) is reminding travelers to use caution this morning.

Whether traveling by foot or in vehicles, slick conditions are possible from Monday’s night mix of sleet and freezing rain. SHA crews were deployed overnight and will continue storm operations through the morning rush hour.

“SHA asks motorists to drive at the appropriate speed for the conditions this morning and delay travel if warranted,” said SHA Administrator Melinda Peters. “Based upon the storm’s path overnight and this morning, road conditions could change dramatically as you travel, so please use caution.”

Ramps, bridges and overpasses freeze first, so drivers should remain on guard at all times. Officials are monitoring the storm from SHA’s Statewide Operations Center (SOC) in Hanover with centralized communications and access to more than 400 traffic cameras.

Operations staff will also post information on overhead electronic signs for motorists and communicate directly with emergency traffic patrols and state and local police.
