Clarksburg High Students Told to Shelter in Place on Friday Morning
Clarksburg High School students were told to shelter in place on Friday morning after officials received a report that a student might have a weapon on campus.
Principal Stephen Whiting has written a letter to parents about the incident and posted it on the school’s website.
“I want to share with you information about an event that impacted our school and how it was handled by our staff and our partners with the Montgomery County Police Department,” wrote Whiting. “Shortly after 10 a.m. we received a report that a student might be in possession of a weapon at the school. We quickly contacted the police and, in order to ensure the safety of our students and staff, we went into a public safety community shelter. We located the student in question and briefly went into a lockdown while he was brought to the office. Once the student was in the office, we returned to a public safety community shelter, which means that classroom instruction continued as normal, but we limited movement throughout the hallways and between portable classrooms.”
On the Montgomery County Police Department’s Twitter account, police tweeted that officers responded to the “report of [a] possible firearm on school campus.”
Whiting said students were sheltered in place while the police investigation was underway.
“No weapon was found on the student, in his belongings, or at the school,” Whiting said in the letter on the school’s website. “Once the investigation was complete the shelter was lifted and we resumed our normal day and students received lunch. I would like to emphasize that there were no threats against the school and that our students and staff were safe.”
MCPS Spokesperson Dana Tofig turned to Twitter to emphasize the school was not on lockdown. He also said that MCPS takes the safety and security of its students seriously.
