New City Council Member Yvette Monroe is Sworn in at Gaithersburg City Hall (PHOTOS & VIDEO)

It’s official: Olde Towne resident Yvette Monroe is the newest Gaithersburg City Council member, and she’s also the first African American to serve on the City Council.
Monroe was sworn into office at Gaithersburg City Hall on Feb. 8. She was appointed to the position following the death of Councilmember Henry Marraffa, who died last year after a battle with leukemia.
“It is a privilege to represent the residents of the city that I have come to love,” said Monroe after taking her seat at the dais. “I am especially honored to be appointed to this position as Gaithersburg celebrates African American History Month, and I believe I am the first African American to serve on the City Council, and that is not a responsibility that I take lightly. Living in the most diverse city in the country is exciting, and I welcome the opportunity to represent people from all backgrounds as we strive together to make this a wonderful place to live, work, learn and play. I do look forward to interacting with all of you.”
According to a city news release, Monroe will serve on the Council until Nov. of 2017, when the next city election takes place. Monroe has a long history of volunteer service with the city of Gaithersburg, and was even selected as Citizen of the Year.
