Child Killed By Car in Rockville Parking Lot
Police say a 3-year-old boy was hit by a car in a Rockville parking lot Tuesday; he died from his injuries in the hospital.
According to tweets from Pete Piringer, the spokesperson for Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Services (MCFRS), the incident occurred in a Sandy Spring Bank parking lot, “near Veirs Mill Road” on the Rockville Pike.
Capt. Thomas Jordan from Montgomery County Police confirmed that the boy was hit by a 2010 Ford Explorer as he was crossing the parking lot.
Police said Pedro Zavala Leal, 44, of the 6200 block of Fernwood Terrace in Riverdale, Maryland was driving the vehicle. Leal remained on the scene of the collision, police said.
A police statement identified the boy as Antonio Martinez Cruz of Rockville.
Initially, there were reports that the child was 2 years old, but Jordan said that the boy was actually 3.
At the time of the accident, Piringer tweeted that the boy was “trapped under” a vehicle, but the rescue team was able to free the boy.
