Caught on Video: Thieves Swipe ATM But Can’t Complete Transaction
Four ersatz thieves hatched a plan to drive a pickup truck through the front window of a Silver Spring 7-Eleven in an attempt to carry off an ATM machine, a Montgomery County police statement said.
Although they got the machine out of the store and into the parking lot, the quartet of would-be robbers decided to give up and leave it there, police said.
The theft occurred about 4 a.m. Feb. 17 at a 7-Eleven at 10203 New Hampshire Ave., police said.
Detectives learned that three of the four, with their faces concealed, entered the convenience store when the fourth drove the pick-up truck through the store’s front window. Surveillance video shows three men getting the ATM on an handcart and wheeling it out of the store. But once they’re through the door, the ATM falls over. Then the three seem to argue about their next steps. Eventually, they flee but one returns to grab the handcart.
They got the ATM to the parking lot but fled, leaving the ATM in the parking lot, police said.
Later that morning, detectives found the pickup, which had been stolen, unoccupied in Hyattsville.
Anyone with information about the attempted theft is asked to call the police Major Crimes Division at 240-773-5100. To be eligible for a reward, tipsters may call Crime Solvers of Montgomery County toll-free at 1-866-411-TIPS (8477). Crime Solvers will pay a cash reward of up to $10,000 for information that leads to an arrest. Tipsters may remain anonymous.
