Carvana to Open ‘Car Vending Machine’ in Gaithersburg
Carvana — which operates the terrarium-looking building off I-270 — is about to open, the company said Wednesday.
The company gives consumers a chance to search for cars online, and purchase and finance them, at carvana.com. Once selected, customers can pick up their vehicle at one of its “car vending machines.”
A news release from the company says the eight-story all-glass car vending machine holds 30 cars. Customers receive a commemorative, oversized Carvana coin on-site that starts the vending process, which ends with the car in the delivery bay.
Carvana is at 15710 Shady Grove Road, Gaithersburg, and it is open Monday through Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Vehicle pickup at any of the company’s vending machines is free for all Carvana customers.
The Phoenix-based company was founded in 2012.
Carvana claims it has removed the traditional dealership infrastructure. The website enables consumers to choose the cars they want, qualify for financing, get a trade-in value, sign contracts, and receive as-soon-as-next-day delivery or pickup of the vehicle, according to a company news release.
For customers who live outside the D.C. area but would still like to pick up their car at the Vending Machine, the company says it will subsidize $200 in airfare and arrange transportation from Dulles International Airport.
Carvana has 10,000 cars in its inventory and all have a seven-day return policy. Each car has passed a 150-point inspection, have never been in a reported accident and have no frame damage, the company says.
At Carvana.com, car shoppers can find information about car features, imperfections and updated information about open safety recalls for every vehicle in Carvana’s inventory.
