Captain John Feissner Retires After 34 Years with Fire Department

After serving more than 30 years with Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services, Captain John Feissner is retiring at the end of March.

“It’s been wonderful,” he said. “I’ve been very blessed to witness a lot of changes over my tenure with the fire service.”

One change in particular Feissner noted is the growth of the fire department since he joined in the 1980s: around the time local volunteer companies transitioned into being employed by county government.

“Since then, our fire services has grown exponentially.  We probably have well over 1,200 active fire rescuers as well as the many volunteers,” Feissner said.

Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Services Chief Scott Goldstein, who described Feissner as “charismatic and engaged,” said he will be missed.

“The most enjoyable part of retirement ceremonies is being able to thank them for their service and to see someone who is walking away from their career with good health,” Goldstein said. “These careers take a toll on the body in multiple different ways and there’s a high frequency of retirements based on injury.”

And even though Feissner is retiring, he said he’s not going too far. He has lived in Montgomery County since 1960 and plans to stay here with his wife Juli, a former firefighter for MCFRS and their son Justin.

“In order to keep my paramedic status, one has to be affiliated in the county with a fire department so I am planning to pursue that by becoming a member here at the local fire volunteer fire department,” he said.
