Canada Dominates at the World Games
Every four years the Federation of International Lacrosse has a tournament that gathers many nations together to compete for a gold medal. The teams split up into different divisions where they compete in round robin play. The elite division (Blue Division) is highlighted by Team USA, Team Canada, Team Australia and Team Iroquois. Team USA won the 2010 World Games in Manchester, England. They took down Team Canada in a 12-10 thriller. Team USA has won 9 gold medals and has at least won a bronze in every single World Games. This year Team Canada was determined to show dominance and beat Team USA. The two teams played in the very first game of the 2014 World Games on July 10th. Canada started out with a lead but Team USA went on a 8-0 run to quickly end the Canadian dominance. After the 10-7 loss, Canada was determined to win all of their games. Canada found inspiration in former Canadian goalie Craig Sanderson who died from a brain tumor. Canada mustered up enough strength to win the rest of their games and set themselves up in the semifinals against the Iroquois Nations. The Iroquois (Six Nations) is a very youthful team led by the Thompson’s. Lyle, Miles, Ty and Jeremy Thompson helped the Iroquois get a nice lead against Canada but the Canadians somehow found a way to comeback and win 12-6. The next game for Canada was the championship against Team USA. The Americans pounded the Aussies 22-3 to get to the championship for a chance to silence Canada once and for all.
As both National Anthems were being sung you could feel the intensity rising. Both teams were ready for a physical and exciting 60 minutes of lacrosse. Team Canada started the game of strong as Kevin Crowley put the Red and White on the scoreboard. Canada jumped out on Team USA from the first whistle which made life a lot harder for the Americans. Canadian goalie Dillon Ward only allowed 5 goals which resulted in a gold medal for the boys up north. Canada captured their 2nd gold medal ever in the win against Team USA. Goalie Dillon Ward was named the tournament MVP with 10 saves in the championship. The Canadian victory sets up the perfect storyline for the 2018 Manchester World Games. The Americans will be looking to avenge themselves in the place where they took the gold and the Canadians will be looking to knock down Team USA once more. Comment who will win the 2018 games below.
