UPDATED Montgomery County firefighters are investigating what sparked a blaze on the first floor of a two-story townhouse in Burtonsville on June 1 that has displaced a family of two.
According to Fire and Rescue Spokesperson Pete Piringer, there was extensive damage to the townhouse at 2922 Hickory Leaf Way.
Piringer reported on his Twitter account that firefighters rescued three cats and resuscitated another. Several others are missing, he said, and may have died.
There were no other injuries, Piringer said.
Damage is estimated at $300,000 and firefighters believe an electrical appliance in the kitchen caused the fire.
Firefighters plan to be back in the neighborhood on June 2 to check smoke alarms at adjacent residences.
