Burtonsville Man Faces 18 Counts of Child Pornography

A federal grand jury has indicted a 31-year-old Burtonsville man on 18 counts of child pornography, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.

According to the indictment, Kyle Stephen Thompson allegedly engaged in sexually explicit conduct with three minors from May 9, 2015, to Jan. 28, 2017, to produce visual depictions documenting the abuse.

Investigators believe that Kyle Thompson may have befriended women who have young girls to gain access to the girls, the U.S. Attorney’s Office statement read. Anyone who may have information regarding inappropriate or criminal activity committed by Thompson, or possible victims of Thompson, is asked to contact the Baltimore FBI at 410.265.8080.

If convicted, Thompson faces a mandatory minimum of 15 years in prison and up to 30 years in prison for each of the 18 counts of production of child pornography. Thompson is detained on related state charges, the statement read. Thompson’s initial appearance in U.S. District Court in Greenbelt has not yet been scheduled.

According to online court records, Thompson was arrested on a criminal warrant on March 29 and charged by Montgomery County police with sex abuse of a minor and a third-degree sex offense. He is being held without bail, according to the records.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. The initiative marshals federal, state, and local resources to find, apprehend and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
