Buried by Debris, Woman Dies at Shady Grove Transfer Station

A Shady Grove Transfer Station employee died Thursday afternoon after she was buried by yard debris, according to Montgomery County officials.

The woman, Gladis Loren Melendrez Fuentes, 35, died before crews could remove her from the debris.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich said grief counselors will be available for staff at the transfer station.

“The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection is a part of a big family of County workers, and we are all affected by this tragic loss,” Elrich said in a statement.

Montgomery County police’s Major Crimes Division is investigating, but “it does not appear to be criminal related,” Officer Rick Goodale said in a video posted on Twitter.

The Shady Grove Transfer Station is at 16101 Frederick Road in Derwood.

County Council President Nancy Navarro said the council would work with the Elrich administration to determine the cause of the accident.
