If you would have told me that brooms could conduct electricity, I would have said, “I don’t think so.” Thanks to a Pepco training on hurricane preparedness in Rockville on May 29, I will live to see another day.
Pete Pedersen, a Pepco Operations Distribution Analyst, said that even leaves can conduct electricity because there are thousands of bolts of electricity that run through a light pole. Unless you have special gear issued for working with high voltage, you shouldn’t be handling downed power lines, he added.
Pedersen brought out a live line simulator to show possible situations people can find themselves injured by a power line.
In an MyMCMedia extra, Hurricane Season Starts June 1 , Pedersen gave me one of his top tips for staying safe from power lines.
