Brookhaven Elementary School is the Montgomery County Winner of Maryland Breakfast Challenge Second Year in a Row

Brookhaven Elementary School is the Montgomery County winner of the Maryland Breakfast Challenge. The school won the challenge after successfully implementing an alternative breakfast model that increased student breakfast participation.

According to an April 11 Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) release, the school was awarded $1,000 from No Kid Hungry Maryland.

“Brookhaven is excited to have won this award for the second year in a row. I’m proud of our children for making healthy choices. Eating breakfast gets their day of learning off on the right foot. Thank you Share Our Strength and No Kid Hungry Maryland for your partnership,” Shahid Muhammad, principal of Brookhaven Elementary School said.

David Sloan is the director of No Kid Hungry Maryland.

“Schools across Maryland have demonstrated incredible creativity and persistence in finding ways to overcome the barriers that have kept too many kids from getting the breakfast they need each day,” Sloan said. “From Saint Mary’s to Baltimore to Montgomery counties, schools have dug in and made breakfast a part of the school day,” he said.

The Challenge included the participation 231 schools across the state that implemented innovative solutions to provide more students with breakfast. For more information on the Challenge, visit the No Kid Hungry Maryland website.
