Lower Booze Creek Celebration

The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) will celebrate the restoration of Lower Booze Creek and invites the Bannockburn community to attend the event and learn more about the project. The event will be held Saturday, May 18 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the project entrance along Helmsdale Road and Selkirk Drive. The rain date is May 19.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the design and construction of the project; view educational displays; participate in assessments of aquatic life; and take a tour of stream restoration techniques. Representatives from the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) and the Friends of Cabin John Creek will participate in the event and explain what residents can do to help improve their local waterways. Attendees will also learn more about a similar project planned for the Bannockburn Branch, east of Wilson Lane.

Residents who wish to walk the length of the project with staff should be prepared for walking on uneven, wet and possibly rocky terrain for approximately three-quarters of a mile. Participants are asked to wear appropriate footwear, preferably knee boots (no open-toed shoes), and be aware of possible exposure to wildlife, poison ivy, ticks and other flying insects.

Partially funded with grants from the Maryland Department of the Environment, the restoration project involved installing 35 habitat improvement structures along more than 4,000 feet of stream using natural channel design principles. The project required coordination with local residents and collaboration with the WSSC to reline eight exposed sewer lines and protect three manholes and an eight-inch water line.
