Blown Fire Hydrant Damages Silver Spring House Nearby (PHOTOS)
A fire hydrant that blew off the water main Sunday night in Silver Spring shot water at such high pressure that is caused “significant” damage to a home that was more than 20 feet away.
Washington Suburban and Sanitary Commission spokesman Jerry Irvine told MyMCMedia water from the hydrant crashed through a home’s bay window on Peach Orchard Road causing “significant damage to the home.”
WSSC Spokeswoman Lyn Riggins said the homeowners is on vacation and there is a lot of “water that went into the house.”
Montgomery County Fire officials had just recently de-linked from the hydrant, having used it to fight a house fire on Kings House Road, according to Irvine. A weakness within the pipe caused the hydrant to give way, according o Irvine.
Riggins said about 13 customers in the area were without water for a short time as crews shut it off to do some work. Riggins could not say how many gallons of water gushed from the hydrant.
