‘Black lives matter’ Sign at a Bethesda Church Vandalized Again (PHOTO)
Someone vandalized the “Black Lives Matter” sign outside a Bethesda church on Aug. 11. cutting out the word “black” leaving only “lives matter.”
It is the second incident at the River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation. The first happened on July 29.
“It’s unacceptable,” said Rev. Louise Green.
The church replaced the sign on Aug. 6 and according to Green the sign was vandalized the second time on Tuesday between 1:00 p.m. and 3 p.m.
“We are reading some data and also adding additional security. … We know this is not about the sign itself and the vandalism of property,” she said.
Green said they plan to replace the sign once again.
“It is a message that we are taking; a stand that all African American lives matter. … We consider this not our property but our social stand,” she said.
Black Lives Matter is a nationwide movement that advocates for all black lives.
Both incidents have been reported to Montgomery County Police.
Police said there are no suspects at this time.
River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation takes a stand for social justice. The church has programs to work with immigration, environmental, and reproductive justice. They also advocate for LGBT equality.
