BikeShare Rates Increase May 1

Starting May 1 it’s going to cost you more to use Capital Bikeshare.
Annual membership will jump from $75 to $85, while casual one-day users will pay $8, up from $7.
The pricing structure change derives from a review of public comments made at the Capital Bikeshare Open House held on Jan. 28 and through email comments received through February 15 to Capital Bikeshare. The revenue received from the price change will be used to offset increases in labor costs and costs associated with expansion from the original 114 stations that opened in September 2010 to nearly 350 stations throughout the region today, according to a release from Capital Bikeshare.
Because of this additional revenue, Capital Bikeshare will also be able to implement new techniques to improve the availability of bikes and empty docks at stations, otherwise known as “rebalancing.” This will include experimentation with bike corrals in high-ridership areas during peak usage hours, improved data analysis for operations management, and future expansion of the system to underserved regions of the Capital Bikeshare service area, according to the release.
Individuals can purchase new or renew annual memberships at the current rate of $75 until April 30.
In addition to the price adjustments, Capital Bikeshare will also be removing the $101 authorization hold placed on credit/debit cards used to purchase short term memberships at stations, also effective May 1, 2015. This change will reduce the barriers to entry for those interested in gaining access to the bike share program.
