Bethesda Man Chosen Chief Actuary for State Insurance Regulators
A Bethesda man has been chosen to be the state’s chief actuary for the Maryland Insurance Administration.
Todd Switzer will have management responsibility for the actuarial team that manages the processing and evaluation of various health insurance rate filings in the individual and small group market segments. The team also completes life company valuations, participates in financial examinations and reviews actuarial opinions and memorandums.
In a news release, Maryland Insurance Commissioner Al Redmer Jr. said Switzer brings a wealth of insurance knowledge and actuarial experience to the role of chief actuary. Switzer will manage the administration’s rate review process, a regulatory function that the administration performs to protect Maryland consumers.
Switzer has more than 19 years’ experience in the insurance industry in actuarial roles with both CareFirst and Mass Mutual. Before joining the Insurance Administration, Switzer was senior director of actuarial pricing of Group Hospitalization and Medical Services Inc. where he led the rate development process for the individual and small group markets.
Switzer holds a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Boston University where he graduated magna cum laude. He is an associate of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries as well as a graduate of Leadership Montgomery County.
The administration is an independent state agency that regulates Maryland’s $28.5 billion insurance industry.
