Bethesda Big Train Wins Cal Ripken Collegiate Championship Series, 4-2, Over Baltimore Redbirds (VIDEO)

The Bethesda Big Train baseball team defeated the Baltimore Redbirds, 4 – 2, in front of a packed crowd at Shirley Povich Field on Sunday night to win the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League’s League Championship Series for the sixth time in the league’s 13 year history.
It was an exciting finish as Sunday night’s contest was the deciding game in the best two out of three championship series as the Big Train won at home Thursday night, and the Redbirds won in Towson Saturday afternoon.
Big Train catcher Justin Morris’ double in the fourth inning scored three runs to break a scoreless tie and put Bethesda on top to stay. Morris (Maryland) was named the Most Outstanding Player of the League Championship Series. Tyler Smith (East Carolina) pitched five shutout innings to get the win, and Stephen Schoch (UMBC) picked up the save by shutting out the Redbirds in the final two innings.
The 2017 Big Train’s 35-10 regular season and playoff record is the second best in the team’s 19 seasons, trailing only the 2011 team that compiled a record of 36-9. The 2017 Big Train team is currently ranked number four in the nation by Collegiate Summer Baseball. Final rankings are expected in about two weeks.
