Beltway Closed for Five Hours Following Accident
The outer loop of 495 was closed for five hours during the early morning hours of June 2 after a tractor trailer hit a Maryland State Police Trooper’s vehicle and another car and destroyed 150 feet of guardrail.
According to an account from the Maryland State Police, Trooper T. Flowers-Jackson was conducting a traffic stop on the outer loop of the Beltway at 2:03 a.m. west of Route 29 when the driver of a tractor trailer traveled onto the right shoulder of the roadway striking the trooper’s vehicle and the stopped vehicle.
Police said the driver of the tractor trailer fell asleep at the wheel.
“The statements provided by the driver at the scene revealed that he fell asleep at the time of the incident, and traveled onto the right shoulder of the roadway, striking the trooper’s vehicle and the violator’s vehicle. The tractor trailer then struck the right guardrail, destroying approximately 150 feet of guardrail, before the tractor trailer jack-knifed, leaking fuel onto I-495,” according to the police account of what happened.
Police have identified the driver of the tractor trailer as Terry Lee Kendrick of Roanoke, Virginia. Police say the trooper and driver of the other vehicle were transported to Holy Cross Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and released.
The Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division was dispatched to the scene of the accident to inspect the tractor trailer for any mechanical malfunctions.
