Montgomery Community Media (MCM) produced the county’s Public, Education and Government television stations’ (PEG-TV) hyper-local and live Primary Election Night coverage on June 24. The coverage began with cut-ins from our studios at 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. and then continued with a three-hour broadcast, on-air and online, that included election results and reaction. The live broadcast featured reports from our newly designated Social Media Room, the Board of Elections and from the field in Silver Spring, as well as interviews in the studio and on the telephone.

You may know Merlyn Reineke as MCM’s executive director but did you also know that he is the Chair of the PEG Governance Board? The board includes representatives from County Cable Montgomery, Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery College, the city of Rockville, the city of Takoma Park and MCM.

“One of the largest projects the PEGs undertake is local election coverage,” said Reineke. “This year, the PEGs are covering both the primary and general elections with unique coverage seen nowhere else. NO single PEG entity has the resources to provide this coverage alone, so the PEGs collaborate efforts during election season, particularly on election night with live local telecasts.”

Susan Kenedy and Sonya Burke hosted Primary Election Night coverage, which included reporting from Valerie Bonk, Michael Bruen and Julie Rios-Little. Tony Zucconi served as Executive Producer. Some of the guests, local officials and expert panelists that contributed to our coverage included: Dan Reed, blogger, JustUpThePike.com; Steve Simon – Van Eperen, Media Consultant; Mike Knapp, former County Councilmember and CEO Orion Ventures; Casey Aiken, host of 21 This Week; Marilyn Balcombe, president and CEO of the Gaithersburg-Germantown Chamber of Commerce; Bruce Adams, director, Office of Community Partnerships; Charles Duffy, host of Channel 16’s Political Pulse; Pete Fosselman the Mayor of Kensington; Katja Bullock, the vice chair of the County’s GOP; Cherri Branson, Montgomery County Councilmember District 5; Gabriel Albornoz, director, Department of Recreation and chair of Dem. Central Committee; Craig Rice, Montgomery County Council President; Bridget Newton, the Mayor of Rockville; Lou Peck, contributing editor and political writer for Bethesda magazine; and Jeffrey Slavin, the Mayor of Somerset.
