Fatal Accident in Gaithersburg

Montgomery County police are investigating a fatal accident that occurred at the Great Seneca Highway entrance of the Lakelands community in Gaithersburg at 7:49 p.m. on Sept. 23.

According to the police department’s preliminary investigation, a 2003 Toyota Highlander was traveling south on Great Seneca Highway. Investigators said a 1999 black Lexus LS 400 was traveling north on Great Seneca Highway and attempted to make a left turn onto Lakelands Drive when the two vehicles collided at the intersection.

The female passenger in the Lexus was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where she was declared deceased. Police have identified her as Elizabeth Colvin Colton, age 69, of Hart Road in Kentlands. The male drive of the Lexus was transported to a local hospital by ambulance and remains in critical condition. The female driver of the Toyota and male passenger were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said. Police have identified the driver of the Toyota as Rachel Leah Weintraub (age 21) of Rockville.

A portion of southbound Great Seneca Highway, between Lakelands Drive and Kentlands Boulevard, was closed for over five hours while police were reconstructing the accident. The circumstances surrounding the collision remain under investigation, police said.

Officer Rebecca Innocenti said the Montgomery County Police Department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) is handling the investigation.
