Back To School Safety

image of school crossing guaedMontgomery County Police Traffic Division announced this year’s Back to School Enforcement Campaign which is set to begin on the first day of school, Monday, August 27. In addition to the traditional enforcement of speed, school bus, and pedestrian violations, this year’s campaign will include the expansion of the use of speed cameras.

In addition to the new automated enforcement locations, the police department will use a new approach to the deployment of speed cameras. To help reduce speeding in school zones, the Automated Traffic Enforcement Unit will deploy a fleet of mobile speed-camera vans rotating between schools from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. This will be in addition to the 21 fixed speed camera sites already in place in school zones across the county. The fixed speed camera have been in place for several years now. As a result, drivers have become familiar with the speed camera locations and often resume speeding after passing the speed camera.

With the new “corridor approach” entire roadways, rather than specific sites, are monitored by speed cameras that are continuously moved throughout the length of the monitored roadway. This strategy is intended to encourage drivers to respect the speed limit for the entire stretch of the monitored roadway.
