Big news at Montgomery Community Media this week: the Alliance for Community Media (ACM) has named MCM the number one station in the country in the Public, Education and Government (PEG) arena. The prestigious award for overall excellence will be formally handed out in Chicago at the national conference on August 1. Staffers believe this the first time in its 25-year history that MCM/MCTV has ever won the general excellence award. MCM also won ACM’s best promotional spot for its work for the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair. Two MCM staffers, Diego Torres and Tony Zucconi, were just awarded the employees of the quarter award for their work on that spot. Congratulations to them for their award-winning creativity!

Over 40 nonprofits were represented at Non Profit Organization (NPO) Day at MCM’s studios on June 25. California Pizza Kitchen (corporate) partnered with MCM on the event. Sustainability was the theme as local organizations are constantly trying to do more with fewer resources. Here’s a link to our report.  In addition, the day- long educational event will also be produced into a show for Channel 21. Look for another NPO day to be scheduled later this year.

Our coverage of Montgomery County Council President Roger Berliner’s press conference continues. His June 25 meeting with the media is now posted on our website. Surrounded by local reporters, Berliner called the county’s six-year fiscal plan “sobering.” Berliner did not meet with the media on July 2 but he is planning a July 9 meeting.

Spectators at Congressional AT&T Nationals Golf TournamentOne of my favorite stories this week was covering the AT&T National at Congressional Country Club where we were on the Tiger hunt. On this story, I learned that heels and 18 holes of golf don’t mix well especially on a hot day! Still it was lots of fun to watch the golfers and to meet the volunteers and fans at the event. We found Tiger who ended up winning his tournament a few days later.  Here’s a link to our report.

Still, trying to grow our Facebook page where we post videos and blog links to our website. Please “like” us if you haven’t already and stay informed on a daily basis of what we are covering and what’s happening around Montgomery County.

Our website’s analytics are growing every week. Our biggest videos last week were from Silverdocs (“I Love This Man” & “Meeting the Ambassador” reports) and the Silver Spring Blue Fest. Follow the links if you missed them.

Hope you are keeping cool on these record hot days!
