ATF, Local Police Arrest Man with Cash, Guns, Heroin Laced with Fentanyl
Officers from Takoma Park police, Montgomery County police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested a man and seized three handguns, $37,000, drug-packaging material as well as narcotics suspected to be heroin laced with fentanyl, a Takoma Park police statement said Thursday.
The arrest was part of a multiagency undercover investigation that is being conducted in conjunction with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Maryland, the statement said.
The name of the man arrested was not included in the police statement so it wouldn’t compromise “the integrity of the future prosecution,” ATF Special Agent Dave Cheplak said.
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid. Because of its high potency, users have a great risk of overdose, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
The investigation was initiated in September of 2016 in response to an increase in violent crime and drug activity in the area. Local, county and federal investigators worked together and spent countless hours conducting surveillance and proactive enforcement activity to develop probable cause for a federal search warrant, the statement said.
ATF is the lead federal law enforcement agency with jurisdiction involving firearms and violent crimes, and regulates the firearm industry.
